While working in a professional setting such as a doctor's office, you may come across many challenges. One situation you might come across is a patient being rude, and instead of handling the situational unprofessionally, you will need to calm yourself and think about how you are going to respond. As a employee, doctor, businessman/woman, it is your responsibility to diffuse the problem in the best way possible. Another concern or challenge is watching how you word questions or phrases. When speaking to your mentors, you don't want to come across as rude, obnoxious, or too self-absorbed. "Filter" what you say when speaking to a superior. Social Intelligence is the ability to understand and manage men, women, boys and girls, to act wisely in human relations (Thorndike). Social Intelligence is important because it helps us with our communication skills, listening skills, and impression management skills. When speaking with another person, you want to make a good first impression and be able to hold a conversation while sounding intelligent and without offending another person. Having social intelligence also allows you to understand how people tick and understand their behaviors. One thing that stood out in the article to me was when he spoke about having the ability to effectively negotiate complex social relationships and environments. I can relate to this in the sense that sometimes I have trouble communicating with patients. I have learned that it is just best to nod your head and smile rather say something you don't mean, or talk about something you don't understand. Afterwards I can then ask my mentor about the situation and how to best approach it if it were to happen again.

My essential question:
Which type of orthopedic treatment is the most effective in preventing future injuries and specifically what types of injuries respond best to brace treatment. Why I selected this as my essential question: I selected this as my essential question because it is a topic of interest for me. After reading an article on the effects of bracing the ankle in male soccer players, it made me wonder of the importance in bracing after a major or minor injury and if that was the best orthopedic treatment. I feel this topic is widely discussed throughout the sport medicine field and my understanding of it will be an advantage in the future. What excites me the most about answering this question: The most exciting thing about finding the answer to this question is being able to relate it to myself and the future patients I will come across. I have had to wear many braces myself in the past, and knowing whether or not they are truly benefiting me will allow me to apply this knowledge to future injuries. Also, after finding the answer to this question, it will allow me to apply my research to my patients life in order to help them recover to their maximum health and feel 100% after recovering from their injury. Why I feel that this question accurately reflects my desire/need to find out more about this topic: I feel this question accurately reflects my desire to research this topic because it is relevant to my future. Having this knowledge in my background gives me an advantage because it will help me put forth my best effort to help my patients recover, and that is the goal of being a doctor. You want to have your patients best interest in mind, and this question covers a topic that is popular in the world of medicine. I feel that Hogan Healthcare is a "partner in my education" through many ways. While shadowing Dr. Hogan, I have noticed that a majority of the information relates to a class I am taking my junior year (Human Anatomy/ Physiology). This plays a role in my education in both fields(at the intern site and in my class) because this helps me incorporate the information I have learned in class to the information I am learning while interning. It gives me a more thorough understanding and examples to go by.
A goal I have consider to improve on so far is taking more initiative. Instead of standing around the office and observing, I try to ask more questions and get involved in more conversations. Also, instead of waiting for someone to ask me to complete a task, I've worked on trying to take the initiative to ask them first. I'm trying to work on stepping out of my comfort zone. I have changed one of my goals to being able to memorize all the anatomical body structures, so that when Dr. Hogan ask me a question, I will be able to respond more appropriately. I feel that my drive for organization and my ability to do office work quickly has helped my supervisors job be a little less stressful. I am always helping them pull, file, and make new charts. This helps them by lessening their work load for the evening, and letting them leave a little bit earlier than usual. I also help organize the files for the patients appointments for the upcoming day. I will go pull them and put them in the order of their appointment time, so that my supervisors won't have to worry about it in the morning. If they need me to make copies of paperwork, or go pull a brace/boot from the back; that's what I do. I try to help out around the office as much as I can while still gaining knowledge from Dr. Hogan. MY PROFILE: Hello! My name is Haleigh and I am currently a junior at South Forsyth High School. This year I had the opportunity of participating in the Honors Mentorship Program which is a course that is designed to allow students to explore a variety of career options while shadowing a professional in their field of interest.
MY MENTORSHIP: I am mentoring at Hogan Healthcare which is located in Emory at Cumming. Dr. Hogan has graciously allowed me to shadow him at his practice. I participate in multiple activities such as observing patient check-up/ follow-ups, injections for Botox, pain, or cosmetic purposes, help clean the office, file/pull charts, and everyday I'm learning something new. So far MY FUTURE: I have learned how to take blood pressure, heart rate, and how to draw someone's blood. My future goal is to go into the practice of sports medicine. This mentorship will have allowed me to get a glimpse into what this field of work is all about. It will also allow me to have some background knowledge when I go into my studies at school. Hopefully, this mentorship will help me get into a college with an excellent medical program. My expectations and perception of my internship at Hogan Healthcare has changed a modest amount. Before I started shadowing Dr. Hogan, I believed I would just observe the patients and assess their injuries, but after seeing how he interacts with his patients made me realize there is much more for me to learn about being an orthopedist (or any type of doctor). When the patients come in he doesn't just focus on their current injuries, he ask about past injuries, their life at home, their family, etc; he gets to know the patient personally.
Also, as a intern, I do much more than just observe. Dr. Hogan is gracious enough to let me interact with the patients, and try to assess the injury myself. If one of us interns doesn't understand a particular topic, he will have us research it, and then discuss it the next day more in depth. We also help make, file, and pull charts for the patients. Sometimes, we even get to help retrieve or gather medical supplies. What has surprised me the most is that he lets us sit in on minor surgeries that are done in the office and we get to watch injections such as Botox and lip fillers(with the patients consent of course). I have also done task such as taking a patients heart rate, and in the upcoming week, one of the nurses is kind enough to let me practice drawing blood on her. As an intern, we get to interact and get more hands on than I originally believed I would be able to. As I continue to shadow at my mentorship, I would like to improve in the area of initiative. I believe that I can always improve my performance by asking more questions, doing more research, and just by helping out around the office as much as I can. I am a naturally shy person, and by the end of this internship I would have liked to have stepped outside of my comfort zone and to have more drive; not waiting around for my mentors to tell me what to do. This article furthers my research by looking deeper into a certain area of the sports medicine/orthopedic field, in this case it is ankle injuries and how to avoid more ankle injuries down the road. The article explained the effectiveness of ankle braces after a male athlete has had an ankle injury. A study was conducted where 30 athletes who had a variety of ankle injuries were tested to see if wearing an ankle brace would help prevent ankle injuries in the future, or weaken the ankle and allow for recurring ankle injuries. The study concluded that ankle bracing was in fact more effective than letting an ankle heal with no brace.
